Understanding Your Brand's Personality

Just as every business has its own personality, fonts play a vital role in conveying that identity to your audience. Before you begin take a moment to reflect on your brand's essence, considering words that describe it – is it bold, playful, elegant, or modern? By understanding your brand's personality, you can make informed decisions when it comes to font selection.

Aligning with Your Brand's Essence

Your writing style reflects a personal and considered approach. When choosing fonts, aim for options that seamlessly integrate with your brand's essence. If the feeling your business is trying to project is timeless and approachable, opt for fonts that convey a similar sentiment.

For example, classic serif fonts can evoke a timeless feel, while modern sans-serif fonts may project a more contemporary vibe. Likewise for a fun brand a rounded san-serif or hand-drawn typeface will offer more character and add a playful vibe.

Legibility is key

Ensure that the fonts you choose are not only visually appealing but also easy to read. A balance between style and legibility is essential to create a positive user experience.

Consider the size, spacing, and line height of your chosen fonts to enhance readability. This attention to detail mirrors your commitment to a comprehensive design strategy, ensuring that your website is not just aesthetically pleasing but also functional.

Before I begin any website build I test out the font pairings to see what they look like at each size, including in italics and capitals. This helps me visualise the fonts together, as well as whether they pair well and if they fit the personality and tone we are trying to achieve.

Testing typefaces within Squarespace will help you visualise pairings and the overall feeling the create together.

Versatility in typography

Your choice of fonts should be versatile enough to adapt across various platforms and devices. Responsive design is key to accommodating the diverse ways users access your website, and your fonts should be no exception.

Select a font family that offers a range of weights and styles, allowing you to maintain a consistent look and feel throughout your website. You can check the versatility of your font choices by going into the ‘Header’ and ‘Paragraph’ within Site Styles>Fonts and looking at the different weights (the thickness of a font) and the different styles (normal and italic). If you feel a font is too thin you may wish to increase the weight so it stands out more.

Likewise, for buttons, you can test how well your text standouts and adjust the look by adding spacing between letters, increasing/decreasing the weight, and capitalising the letters.

Harmony in Font Pairing

The harmony between different fonts is crucial on a website. Consider pairing fonts that complement each other, creating a cohesive and visually pleasing design.

Contrast can be achieved through a variety of ways such as combining a bold header font with a more subtle body font, or using different typeface styles such as a serif with a san serif. This not only adds visual interest but also guides the reader's attention.

The Takeaway

Choosing the right fonts for your website is a nuanced process that goes beyond just aesthetics. It involves understanding your brand's personality, ensuring legibility, embracing versatility, and creating harmony through thoughtful font pairing. Taking the time to select fonts that align with your brand's essence will help you create a distinctive online identity that makes sense and captivates your audience.

And remember if you can’t find fonts that feel just right within the Squarespace font library you can always add typefaces via CSS.
